128 civics questions — study by topic for the U.S. citizenship test
USCIS publishes a bank of 128 civics questions for the naturalization test. Questions cover American government, history, geography, symbols and holidays, and the rights and responsibilities of citizens. You will not answer all 128 on test day — an officer asks up to 20 — but you must be ready for any question in the bank.
The five civics topics
USCIS organizes the 128 questions into five areas. Study one topic at a time, then mix topics with a full practice exam:
- American Government — view answer key
- American History — view answer key
- Rights & Responsibilities — view answer key
- Geography — view answer key
- Symbols & Holidays — view answer key
How to use this site
US Citizenship Prep groups practice questions into the same five topics. Start on the topics page, read an answer key if you are new, then quiz yourself with instant feedback and explanations. Your home page tracks accuracy so you know which topic needs more review.
128 questions vs. what you answer on test day
The full bank has 128 possible questions. At your interview, USCIS asks up to 20. You pass with 12 correct answers and fail if you miss 9. Our practice exam follows those same rules — see the 2025 civics test guide for details.
