U.S. citizenship civics test 2025 — what to expect
The U.S. naturalization civics test checks your knowledge of American government, history, geography, symbols, and the rights and responsibilities of citizens. In 2025 USCIS uses an updated question bank of 128 civics questions and a revised passing format.
How the 2025 test works
- A USCIS officer asks up to 20 questions from the 128-question bank.
- You pass when you answer 12 questions correctly.
- The test ends early if you miss 9 questions — you do not pass in that case.
- Questions are asked orally in English during your naturalization interview (unless you qualify for an exception).
The five civics topics
USCIS groups civics questions into these areas — the same topics you can study on this site:
- American Government — practice questions with explanations
- American History — practice questions with explanations
- Rights & Responsibilities — practice questions with explanations
- Geography — practice questions with explanations
- Symbols & Holidays — practice questions with explanations
How our practice exam matches USCIS
Our practice exam follows the 2025 rules: up to 20 random questions, pass at 12 correct, fail at 9 wrong, with early stop when either threshold is reached. Use it after you study each topic to build confidence before your interview.
