U.S. citizenship test 2025 — what changed
If you prepared under an older version of the civics test, check the current rules before your naturalization interview. USCIS updated the civics question bank and the way the oral test is scored for applications filed on or after the effective date of the 2025 revision.
What stayed the same
- The test is still an oral civics exam during your naturalization interview.
- Questions cover U.S. history, government, geography, symbols, and civic rights and responsibilities.
- Most applicants must answer in English unless they qualify for an age or disability exception.
What changed for 2025
- USCIS uses an updated bank of 128 civics questions (replacing the previous 100-question set used in the 2008 version).
- You are asked up to 20 questions instead of the old 10-question format.
- You pass with 12 correct answers and the test ends early if you reach that score.
- The test also ends early if you miss 9 questions — you do not pass in that case.
Old format vs. 2025 format
- 2008 version: 10 questions asked, 6 correct to pass (60%).
- 2025 version: up to 20 questions asked, 12 correct to pass (60%), early stop at 12 right or 9 wrong.
Practice with the new format
Our practice exam matches the 2025 rules. Study the 128 questions by topic, then take timed exams until you pass consistently. Read the full study guide for a step-by-step plan.
